Over the past 15 months, I have visited the province of Quebec four times, exploring Montreal, Quebec City, and the countryside surrounding Saguenay. I have fallen in love with the people, the culture, and the Quebecois perspective on life.
As a tenth generation Texan and someone who has lived in Texas my entire life, visiting Quebec in February was both otherworldly and thrilling.
When Yahoo and Yahoo Travel recently featured this photo (above) on their Instagram accounts (no one told/asked me, but at least they tagged me), I thought it was worth revisiting.
Touring Hôtel de Glace, just a 10 minute drive from Quebec City, was one of the warmest places I spent time while visiting in February! It is always between 23℉ and 26℉ inside and the thick snow walls keep it well insulated.
For the more adventurous, you can spend the night, or even have your wedding in the chapel.
It opens in just a few days! January 4th – March 28th will be its run in 2016.
As a bonus, here I am with my friend Ann, enjoying a cocktail served in a block of ice. We were sitting by the fire, but it was more of a visual trick to keep ourselves warm. The fire only emits the heat of four candles! Eventually Ann and I danced around the room, which had club music playing, to keep ourselves warm.
Visiting Hôtel de Glace, whether it be for an overnight or just a drink at the bar, is truly a unique experience. I’ll never forget it!
As 2015 draws to a close, I’m proud of myself for stepping way out of my comfort zone and taking the leap into Winter in Quebec! I hope 2016 brings more exceptional adventures for us all. Cheers!
May your journey be your muse,
Rachel
